Murcia is a welcoming and friendly city and is the capital of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and is home to San Javier airport.
Founded in A.D. 825 by Abd ar-Rahman II, emir of Al-Andalus, Murcia was originally known as Medinat Mursiya. Owing to its location on the river Segura, the Arabs devised a complex network of irrigation channels that made the town prosperous and made Murcia’s crops famous all over the world. Other Moorish influences remain evident in the city's impressive architecture and boundary walls.
Murcia region has a population of approximately 1.4 million, one third of which live in the capital city itself. Its ideal location on the South-Eastern coastline, coupled with its mild climate, has led to Murcia becoming an increasingly popular destination for property hunters looking for a home in Spain away from the more overdeveloped areas.
Murcia-San Javier Airport is situated 45 kilometres southeast of Murcia City, on the edge of the Mar Menor, close to the towns of San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera. There is also a new airport at Corvera currently under development, which is expected to be open to passengers in 2010.
The city is famous for its baroque cathedral, the Cathedral of the Diocese of Cartagena, constructed between 1394 and 1465 in Castilian Gothic style. Other notable places to visit are the Almudí Palace, Monteagudo Castle, and the Salzillo Museum, to name but a few.
For beach lovers, the region has a plentiful supply of beaches, from small coves only accessible by boat to long sandy stretches dotted with bars and restaurants.
Murcia is also home to several outstanding golf courses, namely:
La Manga Club Resort (voted Europe's top golf resort three times) Mosa Golf Club Club de Golf Altorreal Club de Golf Torrepacheco
